Are gas pistoles the way to go for a side arm or should I look at something different like an AEP or just use my spring pistol I have?

Go with gas pistols hands down... auto electric pistols suck major balls, maybe shoot 120 fps. TM did make an aeg pistol tho and it shoots 230 fps.... I guess you can check that out if you don't wanna use gas. I say use gas though, they have their drawbacks, but they're definitely fun and realistic.

I was down at the store and they said they were getting a new AEP that I should check out.

I'll never switch to an AEP unless they can make them blow back and not sound like they're electric. I like gas guns better than electric guns because they're more realistic in operation and more fun to play with because of it.

Is the only drawback to gas cold? Also, how many rounds per can of green gas do you normally get?

Depending on the gun,you can usually get 1500 or so shots out of a can of green gas. It may be different for HFC134A, but I've never used it so I couldn't tell ya

So, are gas guns the way to go then? And are they the norm?

Yes and yes. They are the norm far and away, since the only skirmishable electric pistol just came out in the last few months. I think gas is the way to go, just because of the feel and the functionality. NBB's aren't made very often because people want the realism of a slide blowing back.

Is it nessicary to carry a side arm in any turnament? Or do people carry them as just back-up and for fun?

Personal prefrence really, I like to have a back-up in case my aeg battery dies or i run out of ammo for my aeg. It's just nice to be able to fall back onto something, especially a gbb because they do have pretty good ammo capacity, some being 25 rds or so per mag. They have good power too, usually 250 fps and up, WA being around 300 fps, holding 30 rds in each magazine. Range isn't up to par of an aeg of course, but they do hit man-sized targets at 50 or so feet without too much problem, this is all relative to what brand of gun you have.
All in all, if you want a gbb sidearm, definitely get it because in the end it will save your butt if you run out of battery or ammo sooner or later. It has for me, and I can't even count how many times I've had to use it, actually getting people out in the process. At the very least, it will hold em off so you can give yourself some time to reload or change out a battery if you carry extra ammo and batteries on like I do. Sometimes it's just fun to use it in a game rather than your aeg, it adds a bit of challenge to the game.
